P.A.U.S.E (Prevailing Attitudes

Under Stressful Emotions)

Our P.A.U.S.E. Domestic Violence Intervention Program empowers participants to take responsibility for their actions, develop healthier relationship skills, and create lasting positive change. Through facilitator-led education, guided self-reflection, and evidence-informed practices, participants build skills in effective communication, emotional regulation, conflict resolution, and accountability. Designed to meet Minnesota statutory requirements (518B.02), the program promotes safer relationships and stronger individuals, families, and communities.

Topics We Cover

Accountability

Participants learn to take full responsibility for their abusive behaviors without minimizing, denying, blaming others, or making excuses. This module emphasizes personal choice, ownership of actions, and understanding that lasting change begins with accepting accountability for one's behavior and its consequences.

Impact of Abuse

This topic examines the physical, emotional, psychological, financial, and social effects of domestic violence on victims, children, families, and the broader community. Participants explore how abusive behaviors create long-term harm and develop empathy by recognizing the lasting impact of their actions.

Awareness

Participants develop greater self-awareness by identifying personal beliefs, attitudes, emotional triggers, thinking patterns, and behaviors that contribute to abusive conduct. This module encourages honest self-reflection and helps participants recognize early warning signs before conflicts escalate into abusive behavior.

Healthy Relationships

This module teaches the characteristics of respectful, safe, and equitable relationships. Participants learn effective communication, healthy boundaries, trust-building, mutual respect, shared decision-making, conflict resolution, and emotional regulation as alternatives to power, control, and abuse.

Parenting

Participants examine how domestic violence affects children and parenting. The curriculum focuses on creating safe, nurturing environments, modeling respectful behavior, understanding children's emotional needs, practicing positive discipline, and developing healthy co-parenting skills when appropriate. Emphasis is placed on recognizing that children are impacted by exposure to domestic violence, even when they are not the direct target of abuse.

Relapse Prevention

Participants develop a personalized plan to prevent future abusive behaviors by identifying high-risk situations, emotional triggers, unhealthy thinking patterns, and warning signs. The module reinforces accountability, coping strategies, support systems, emotional regulation, and ongoing commitment to maintaining healthy, nonviolent relationships after program completion.
